Materials:

2 Balls Alize Maxi Flower Col 5084

Small amount of any weight yarn to make a flower. (flower is Optional)

7mm hook

Adult Small Head Diameter Measured just above the ears 22” /55.7cm

Adult Large Head Diameter Measured just above the ears 26”/ 66cm

Notes:

This hat is worked in a spiral.  Place a stitch Marker at the end of the row to mark it.  Move the stitch marker after each row.

If you are using the Maxi Flower yarn, make sure you push the little flowers to the Right Side of the work as you go.

On Rows where the instructions differ for size, you will either be directed to what row you need to do, or you will see the larger size in brackets.

Gauge: Measured over the pattern.  Measured while blocking.

  • 7 Rows to 4 inches/10cm

  • 26 Stitches to 4 inches/10cm

Abbreviations:

Ch- Chain

Sc- Single Crochet

Hdc- Half Double Crochet

Hk- Hook

Cnr- Corner.

RS- Right Side.

Tr- Treble Crochet

Sslst- Surface Slip Stitch

* to *- Repeat the section between the *s

Rep- Repeat

All Sizes

Ch4, join with slst to first ch to close and form a ring.

Rd1. Ch1. Sc8 into ring.  Place a stitch marker to show where the row ends. Do not close

Rd2. Work 2 Sc into each stitch around. (16sc)

Rd3. * Sc into next st, 2 sc into next st*.  Rep from * to * around. (24sc)

Rd4. *Sc1 into next 2 sts, 2 sc into next st.* Rep from * to * around. (32sc)

Rd5. *Sc1 into next 3 sts, 2 sc into next st.* Rep from * to * around. (40sc)

Rd6. *Sc1 into next 4 sts, 2 sc into next st.* Rep from * to * around (48sc)

Small Size skip to Round 8.

Rd7. *Sc1 into next 5 sts, 2 sc into next st.* Rep from * to * around. (L56sc, XL56sc)

All sizes

Rd8. * Sc1 into next 11 (13) sts, 2 sc into next st.* Rep from * to * around (S52sc, L60sc)

Row 9-21. Sc into each st around. (S52sc, L60sc)

If Using Alize Maxi Flower for the hat, from here on, make certain the flowers are popping out to the back of the work.  That way when you fold the brim up you will have them to the front.

 Row 22-28 Hdc into each st around.  Slst to prev row to close.  Fasten off. (S52hdc, L60hdc)

Weave in any ends

Using any 3 colours of yarn scraps you may have and a hook to suit the yarn

With Colour 1

Rd1. Make a magic ring (or ch4 and close with a slst if you prefer).  Ch1. 6sc into ring.  Join to the first sc (skipping the ch).

Rd2. Ch1. 2 Sc into each st around.  Join to first sc. Fasten off. (12sc)

Rd3. Attach colour 2 with a slst into the top of any st.  Ch1. Sc into each st around. Close with slst in first sc of round. (12sc)

Rd4. *Ch4, tr4 into next st, ch4 slst into next st.* Rep from * to * around till you have 6 petals.  Close with slst into top of ch4.  Fasten off

Rd5. With a contrasting colour, attach yarn with a slst into any st.  Work a surface slst around each petal and then into round 2 of the centre.  Continue in this manner till you meet up with the start. Fasten off.

Weave in ends and use a darning needle to attach to hat.  Position where you like on hat.

How to complete a Surface slst.

Diagram is showing a different project.  Technique is still the same

1.    Attach the yarn at your working edge with a slst.

2.    Insert the hook through the face of your work.

3.    Pull up a loop from the back of the work and through to the front of the work, then through the loop on your hook.

4.    Insert your hook into the next stitch.  Repeat
