Notes:

·       This hat is made for an average sized head.  It is easily adjusted in size by working less rows of the band.

·       There are two options in making this hat. Choice one is the easier version.  The hat pictured is Choice two.

·       In the rib section once you get to Row 2 the Starting chains do not count as a stitch.

·       Count each row of Rib, as it is easy to lose a stitch.

How to Flat Slip Stitch Join:

1.     Lay your work flat with the seams you wish to join touching each other.

2.     Attach the yarn to top right-hand edge closest to you.

3.     Keep the tail of the yarn underneath the work.

4.     Pick up a stitch on edge furthest away from you, then pick up a stitch on edge closest to you. Yarn over and pull through both stitches.  Repeat

Ch20

Row 1. Hdc into 3rd ch from hook.  Hdc in each st across.  Turn. (18hdcs including the chs to start).

Row 2.  From here on (and for remainder of ribbing) the starting chains DO NOT count as a st.  Ch2. BlHdc into each st across. Turn. (18Blhdc).

Rep Row 2 till work measures. 48cm/19 inches or for the head size you need.

Join with a Flat Seam Slip Stitch.  I used this join as it is more in keeping with the ribbed look. A normal slip stitch or needle and thread can also be used.  Do not cut yarn, turn your  work on its side so you can begin the top.

Top Section of the Hat

Chains count as a stitch

Round 1. Ch2.  Work Hdc around ribbing edge.  Try to work a Hdc in the spot where the rows end of rib stitches touch and one in the middle of each stitch on its side.  With the length of rib, I had, I worked 76 Hdcs around. Close round with a slst.

It will not matter if you have a stitch more or a stitch less, but try to make it an even number.   Stitch Count will remain the same from here on.

Now you have a choice to make. Work Round 2 from either Choice 1 or Choice 2.

If you choose choice 1, turn your work now and work back the opposite direction as this will eliminate the crooked seam.

Choice 1. Simple, Easy, Fast

Round 2. Ch2.  Work Hdc in each stitch around.  Close with a slst.  Turn so you will now work back the opposite direction.  You will do that each row to eliminate the moving seam.

Rep round 2 till your work measures 23cm/9 inches from bottom edge of rib to top of work.

You can now do the Optional round 16 in Choice 2.  Or move to closing the hat.  You do not need to do this round.  It is to make the ears point a little more, but it can be skipped.  Your Choice.

Choice 2.   (The Hat pictured is Choice 2)

Round 1 has already been completed

Round 2.  Ch2, Hdc in back loop around.  Join with Slst

Round 3.  Ch2 (Chains count as st in this round), Fpdc in next st.    * Dc in next st, Fpdc in next st.*.  Rep from * to * around and close with sl st to starting chains.

Round 4. Ch2, Fpdc around Fpdc from prev row. *Dc in next st, Fpdc in next st. * Rep from * to * around and close with slst to starting chains.

Round 5. Ch1, Fpsc in every stitch around.  Close with a slst to starting ch. (this creates a cute line across the work)

Round 6. Slst to starting ch top of Round 4.  Dc into next st of Round 4.  Continue with Dc’s in every stitch from Round 4. Close with slst to starting chains of Round 6.

Round 7.  Rep Round 5.

Round 8. Slst to starting ch top of Round 6.  Ch2, Hdc in next st of Round 6. Continue with Hdc’s in every stitch from Round 6. Close with slst to starting Chains of Round 8.

Round 9.  Rep Round 3..

Round 10. Rep Round 4,

Round 11   Rep Round 5.

Round 12. Slst to starting ch top of Round 10.  Dc into next st of Round 10.  Continue with Dc’s in every stitch from Round 10. Close with slst to starting chains of Round 12.

Round 13.  Rep Round 5.

Round 14. Slst to starting ch top of Round 12.  Dc into next st of Round 12.  Continue with Dc’s in every stitch from Round 12. Close with slst to starting chains of Round 14.

Round 15.  Ch2, Hdc in each st around.  Close with slst to starting round chains.

The next Round is optional.  It will just make the ears point a little more.  You can choose to do this round or skip it and go to the closing of the hat instead.

Round 16. This is written for a count of 76 stitches.  If you altered the stitches in your count, then add or subtract from the slst sections of this round. *Slst across the top of the next 8 st’s, sc in the next 4 st’s, hdc in the next 14 st’s, sc in the next 4 st’s, slst across the top of the next 8 st’s*.  Rep from * to *. Fasten off and cut yarn

Closing the Hat

Both Choices:

Fold the hat so the seam sits down the middle of the back and the slip st sections (if you chose to do that round) match.   Turn the hat on its side and attach yarn with a slst 5cm/2inches down from top right corner. Work scs towards the corner, pushing the hook through both layers, do 3sc in the corner and sc across the top of the hat into each st, keeping stitches in line.  Work 3sc into the next corner and sc down the next side for 5cm/2inches.  Fasten off and cut yarn

Sew in any ends. Enjoy!
