Softly Softly, My Dragonfly Scarf
I’m fortunate enough to live surrounded by beauty — views of gorgeous mountains and rainforest that seem to go on forever. And along with all that beauty, I’m often treated to the sight of dragonflies going about their day.
They glide past — quick, light, and with a certain silent majesty.
That’s the vibe I wanted to capture in this scarf design. Softly Softly, My Dragonfly Scarf was designed to reflect that special moment — when a dragonfly pauses mid-air, wings glinting, and then vanishes on the breeze.
This pattern is a follow-up of sorts to my Tranquility of Dragonflies Blanket, but this time I’ve gone for something a bit more wearable. The scarf isn’t a plain rectangle — it flows in and out with soft curves around the dragonflies, as if to hug them.
It’s made using basic stitches, BUT — you’ll want to pay attention to where those stitches go. There’s a pattern repeat, so once you’ve got that sorted, it’s full steam ahead. A great design to pick up and put down as time permits… as long as you keep track of those stitches!
The pattern comes in written format, with plenty of photographs and a symbol-style graph to help visual makers. The graph shows a section of the scarf and is to be used alongside the written instructions — the program I use does have its limits.
I used Yarn Bee Hand Dyed 4ply in Flamenco, and I found myself really liking this yarn. It’s a great project for those special hand-dyed skeins you’ve been saving for just the right moment.
Whether you’re making it for yourself or as a gift, this scarf is light, elegant, and just a little bit on the unique side.
If, like me, you’re a lover of dragonflies and often wonder at the effortless way they pass by, then this is a must-have project.
Softly softly… off they go.
