The Legend of Bell Flower Hallow
The legend tells of a little valley where violet bellflowers bloomed only once each spring.
When a maiden reached adulthood, she was gifted a wrap adorned with the delicate blossoms. But these were no ordinary flowers. The bellflowers were said to whisper the wisdom of the women who had worn them before, passing down the lessons, hopes and experiences of generations.
As part of the coming-of-age tradition, each young woman would make her own wrap, adding 40 bellflowers, one flower and one wish at a time. Each flower carried a wish for her future.
The flowers were believed to gently guide each young woman as she began the next chapter of her life, even helping to guide her towards true love.
But as they say. Ages come and Pass. Tale as old as time!
Maybe for The Legend of Bell FLower Hallow we should say, another tale as old as time.
Flowers have often played a huge part in legends, tales and stories.
I have already delved into connections with Fairytale Legend in a previous blog posts but with today’s pattern launch I though I would take it a step further. The link has already been established between Rapunzel and the rampion flower, but it doesn't end there. Flowers have a habit of appearing in many well-known tales.
There is Beauty and the Beast, with its single enchanted rose.
Then there is Thumbelina and her magical red-and-yellow tulip.
And Sleeping Beauty, where the sleeping princess is protected within a castle surrounded by a tangle of briar roses.
But it is not always happily ever after! Tales and legends can be darker!
The Nightshade Fairy has a rather sinister warning about picking and eating nightshade flowers. Perhaps some flowers are better admired than brought home for the vase.
And then we come to the tale, or perhaps legend, of Bellflower Hallow.
Once each spring, the little violet bellflowers appear across the hillsides. They do not stay for long, but while they bloom, they are said to whisper the wisdom of generations past to those who take the time to listen.
Long ago, the young women of Bellflower Hallow would make themselves a shawl as they came of age. Each shawl was worked with forty bellflowers, and each flower represented a wish for the life that lay ahead.
Forty flowers.
Forty wishes.
And the wonder of what might be!
A BIT ABOUT The Legend of Bellflower Hallow
I wanted this shawl to appear as an abundance of flowers, with the bellflowers draping from the edging, loudly proclaiming the individual wishes bestowed upon each of the 40 bellflowers.
A shawl can mark all sorts of occasions.
A new beginning.
A milestone.
A change of direction.
Or perhaps it is simply a project you fall in love with.
I can also see this being made as a gift, perhaps in ivory or white and bestowed upon a new bride, with all the heartfelt wishes of the giver worked into each flower.
Forty flowers.
Forty wishes for the life ahead.
I rather like that idea.
The Yarn
For my sample I used Bendigo Woollen Mills Cotton 4 Ply in a soft combination of Pale Lilac, Violet, Duck Egg and Snow.
A Little Help Along the Way
The Legend of Bellflower Hallow is not a beginner pattern.
There are flowers, an edging that is worked in specific sections and plenty of places where paying attention is definitely required.
The pattern includes photos and additional help where needed.

This design is meant to challenge and is one of those designs that I think creates a real sense of achievement when you finally finish it.

I wish for compassion to shape my every word.
I wish for trust that cannot be broken.

I wish to leave kindness wherever my footsteps fall.
I wish for the courage to begin again when I must.
I wish for every tear to one day become a smile.
