Winter at Grandmas Scarf
Do you ever look at your yarn stash and wonder how on earth you managed to accumulate so much of it? Especially when the majority of this mountain of yarn consists of odd balls, little bits that are far too good to throw away, and pretties that you simply cannot bear to part with.
You look at all that yarn and start thinking about what you could make with it. A bit like Marion Holland's children's book The Big Ball of String. I can do so many things with a big ball of string (or yarn), but what did I actually want to do?
I had heaps of Stylecraft DK left over from this and that, and that and this. A ball from one project, a few from another, some leftovers from goodness knows when. You know how it goes. The stash grows, the odd balls multiply, and before long you're wondering what on earth you are going to do with it all!
There was far too much good yarn there to simply cast it aside. So, like the big ball of string, I started thinking about all the things I could make with my own big ball of yarn.
But what did I want to make?
My thoughts wandered back to winters and my grandmother. On Saturday mornings, while my parents were working, she would look after me. She would knit squares and then crochet around them, and she had a huge pile of knitting needles. I spent hours playing with them.
A small house, a kerosene heater, knitted squares here and there, and that pile of knitting needles all stick in my memory.
And so, the inspiration for this design began to take shape.
Winter at Grandma's Scarf was born.
Made up of larger squares joined together, with smaller squares added to create a feature, this scarf brings together those memories of traditional handmade warmth. A finished edging and tassels complete the look.
Measuring approximately 33 x 213cm, it's a generous scarf with plenty of length to wrap yourself up when the weather turns chilly.
There is something about winter that makes you want to reach for something warm and cosy. Chilly mornings, cold noses, warm cups of tea and somewhere comfortable to curl up when the weather outside isn't particularly inviting.
Winter at Grandma's was designed with just that feeling in mind. It's a little bit of nostalgia, a little bit of creativity and, best of all, a great use for all those leftover yarn pretties.
Made from this and that, and that and this, no two scarves need to be quite the same. Your choice of yarn and colours will make each one uniquely yours.
