I recently launched A Moment of Butterflies Scarf and fell in love with the delicate wave of butterflies dancing along the edge of the design. The brain cogs began to whirl, and the idea for a belt was born.
Ode to a Butterfly Belt uses the same concept, with a touch of filet crochet (Auburncraft style)* — meaning I’ve tweaked it slightly… and added a whole lot of butterflies.
The best thing about this design is that it can be made to any size by adding or subtracting butterflies. Sizes from x-small to xx-large are included in the pattern, along with the number of repeats needed to achieve them. However, the sky is the limit, and it can easily be made larger.
Due to the shape of the butterflies, the two ends that meet at the centre are not mirrored. However, the pattern is designed to accommodate this, finishing both ends with delicate beading and ties to fasten the belt. Eight beads add just the right touch of elegance to the closure, and if you feel a little hesitant about adding beads, don’t worry — I have a a walk-through in the tips section of the webpage. You’ll also find helpful tips on keeping your filet crochet neat and crisp.
This is a super-fast make at an intermediate level, and one most won’t stop at just one belt… it’s addictive.!
Using fingering weight yarn and a 3.5 mm E hook, it’s a light, delicate make that comes together quicker than you’d expect.
Be warned though… one may not be enough.
Ode to a Butterfly Belt is now available on Ravelry and Etsy.
