A Moment of Butterflies Scarf

January 30, 2026

Catching a glimpse of a butterfly going about its day, always lifts the spirits.

A leftover cake of yarn. Summer. Butterflies. Somehow it all just flowed together.

My new design, A Moment of Butterflies Scarf, has quickly become my new favourite.

I spent forever and a day getting this one just right. At first glance it looks like a filet design — but it has quirks. I wanted the pattern in the main body to really show and be unmistakable. After many attempts (well over ten), it became clear that a standard block-style filet just wasn’t going to cut it.

So this design breaks the rules a little. It uses a mix of larger and smaller filet spaces to make the pattern stand out, and while there is an eight-row repeat, you’ll definitely want your thinking cap firmly in place when it comes to stitch placement.

The butterflies are worked as you go, not added on later. This involves turning the work and crocheting down the side of the scarf for certain rows — a little different, but very satisfying once it clicks.

Yes, it’s a bit challenging. But it’s also wonderfully addictive once you find the rhythm. I have no doubt you’ll fall in love with it just as much as I have.

As always, the pattern has been thoroughly tested by my dedicated team of testers.

For yarn choice, most fingering-weight yarns will work well. Avoid anything with a fuzz factor — I did try, and the pattern simply disappears. Very busy yarns are best avoided too, as they hide the details. Ombre yarns, on the other hand, look absolutely stunning.

This pattern is available on Ravelry and Etsy.
